A language listening game for the classroom.

VoxGuess is a free, browser-based activity in which students hear a short recording and choose the spoken language from four options. It works as a quick warm-up, a geography prompt or a friendly listening competition.

A five-minute whole-class activity

1. Open VoxGuess on a computer connected to classroom speakers.
2. Play one recording without showing the answer choices and ask students what they notice.
3. Reveal the four options and collect reasons for each guess.
4. Choose an answer together, then locate the language or its speakers on a map.
5. Repeat for three to five rounds and record the class score.

Questions that improve listening

• Which sounds or rhythm led to that guess?
• Did words tend to end in vowels or consonants?
• Which two options sounded most similar?
• What additional clue would make the answer more certain?
• Did a familiar word help, or could it be shared by related languages?

Small-group challenge

Create a multiplayer room and share its link with students. Everyone receives the same number of timed rounds but can move at their own pace. The final standings appear when the room has finished, making it suitable for pairs, teams or remote classes.

What students are practising

The activity encourages careful listening, comparison and informed uncertainty. It can open discussion about language families, accents, multilingual communities and the difference between recognising a language and understanding it.

Technical setup

No account or installation is required to play. Test the speaker volume before class and ask students to use headphones when several groups play in the same room. The recordings are drawn from Google FLEURS; details are available in the audio credits.
